Human Reproduction in the Qur’ān (Surah 86:5-7)

We hear from Muslims how the Qur’ān must be from God because it has so many scientific miracles, that Muhammad couldn’t have known all of these amazing things without Allah revealing it to him. Today we’re going to take a deep dive into one of the “scientific proofs” Muslims use to lure unsuspecting people into Islam.

The Qur’ān puts forth the challenge “Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.” — Surah 4:82 Let’s find out if the Qur’ān has any scientific miracles?

Muslims will point to Surah 86:5-7 as one of the proofs that Islam must be true, this particular ayat is speaking about how the male and female body functions in regard baby conception.

The origin of sperm

“Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted-Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:” — Surah 86:5-7

If Allah is supposed is God he would know how the human body works as the Creator, but here we see that the Qur’ān is saying that man is created from a drop (sperm) proceeding or coming from between the backbone and ribs. The problem is this ayat is saying both men and women produce sperm, even more scary is the ayat says that women produce sperm from their breast.

It’s well known that females do not produce sperm only male’s have the ability to produce sperm. Let’s get more clarification from Islam’s trusted scholars let’s look at what al-Jalalayn says.

Tafsir al-Jalalayn: “So let man consider by way of reflection from what he was created from what thing the response is He was created from a gushing fluid gushing forth from the man and the woman into the womb issuing from between the loins of the man and the breast-bones of the woman.”

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: “(He is created from a water gushing forth.) meaning, the sexual fluid that comes out bursting forth from the man and the woman. Thus, the child is produced from both of them by the permission of Allah. (Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs.) meaning, the backbone (or loins) of the man and the ribs of the woman, which is referring to her chest.”

After reading the Tafsir how unscientific is this? Never in the entire history of mankind has a woman ever produced sexual fluid from her chest. No medical professional would agree with this claim from the Qur’ān. We also know that men produce sperm in the lower part of the body namely the testicles, never does sperm come from the backbone.

What determines the gender of the baby?

Let’s see what Muhammad in the Hadith’s say about this?

It was narrated that Anas said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The man’s water is thick and white, and the woman’s water is thin and yellow. Whichever of them comes first, the child will resemble (that parent).'” — Grade: Sahih (Darussalam) Book 1, Hadith 201

Notice that Muhammad in the Sunnah is saying the water (sperm) of the man is thick and white, while the water of the woman is thin and yellow. Looking again at what the Qur’ān said this “water” is sexual fluid. And when a man and woman come together which ever of them climaxes first that “sexual fluid” determines if the baby resembles the father or mother.

How long does sperm live?

Lastly, medically we can know that when sperm is inserted into a woman there’s an expected lifespan for the sperm to live as it has to travel through the woman as it meets the egg for fertilization. The woman’s immune system will begin killing off the millions of sperm deposited reducing them until only 1 get’s to fertilize the egg.

How The Human Being Is Created, In His Mother’s Womb, And His Provision, Lifespan And Deeds Are Written Down, And His Misery and Happiness Hudhaifa b. Usaid reported directly from Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) that he said: When the drop of (semen) remains in the womb for forty or forty five nights, the angel comes and says: My Lord, will he be good or evil? And both these things would be written. Then the angel says: My Lord, would he be male or female? And both these things are written. And his deeds and actions, his death, his livelihood; these are also recorded. Then his document of destiny is rolled and there is no addition to nor subtraction from it. — Sahih Muslim 2644

Here Muhammad says that sperm lives inside the womb for 40 days, the medical field disagrees with this here are 2 quotes from medical sites.

“After ejaculation, sperm can live inside the female body for around 5 days. The fluid in a woman’s reproductive tract has all of the nutrients that sperm need for their survival during that time.” — medicalnewstoday.com

“Ejaculated sperm remain viable for several days within the female reproductive tract. Fertilization is possible as long as the sperm remain alive — up to five days.” — mayoclinic.org

Conclusion

There are just too many errors for in the Qur’ān for this book to be from God. We know that women do not produce sperm nonetheless coming from the breast, neither does the man produce sperm in the backbone or that the baby’s gender is determined from the climax of the parent and lastly that sperm lives for 40 days in the womb.
